By Liz Knese  – My New Journey-Blessed Findings

It all started when my lovely and precious mother in-law gave me a DNA test kit through Ancestry.com this past Christmas. I thought…cool, I’ll find out what my blood line is. I really didn’t think much else would come from it, but God had other plans. Not only did I find out about my blood line, but I also found that I had a first cousin (male).  Ancestry said they were 100% sure of this.

As some of you know, I was adopted from an orphanage in Vietnam. I grew up here in Minnesota with my adoptive family, which I love dearly. Because I feared rejection, it was hard for me to make the decision to contact my new cousin.  I wondered if I would be opening up a can of worms, and I had the fear of, “Am I ready for this?” However, these fears are not from the Lord.

Eventually, God urged me to contact this new cousin of mine. I wrote a brief letter explaining who I was and asked if he would be interested in pursuing a relationship. I left the ball in his court. I felt that my Vietnamese family might be shocked if I contacted them, in more ways than one.

I received a response from my cousin right away stating that he would love to help me!  I am so grateful for all the information he gave me and his determination to help.  In May 2018 his mother sent in her DNA test.  Through this test we learned that my new cousin’s mother and I were a family match. My new cousin is actually my half-nephew and his mother is my half-sister.  On her side of the family there are a total of 12 children!  Adding me to the family makes 12.5!!
